This app was released in 2015, but really gained in popularity in 2016. The app is a news aggregator. But it has a feature that allows it to curate news articles based on items your friends or followers have read and shared on Twitter and Facebook. An issue with the app is that this can create an echo chamber, where you read only the news you prefer. But users do have an option to see news shared by friends of friends. This can you find more diverse articles. This app should certainly not be the only way you find news. But it can be a fun way to find some new articles to read.

Bookout (iOS – free)
This app works similar to fitness tracking apps, but swaps out pages for miles. With Bookout you can track and manage your books. It can help you develop a strong reading habit. Bookout allows you to track and manage a library of books. It also allows you to track your reading in real time. You can keep track of the total time you’ve read or the total number of pages read. The app also allows you to set up monthly or yearly reading goals. When you meet a goal, you can unlock achievements to motivate you to read more.
3. Reduce Daily Stress
Simple Habit (Andriod/iOS – free trial)
Simple Habit wants to help you “stress less and live better.” And who doesn’t want that? The app is designed by a team of Harvard psychologists and mediation experts. Through 5 minute meditations, personalized for different life situations, Simple Habits can help you relax and become more mindful. You can now easily meditate anytime, anywhere.
4. Learn a New Language
Duolingo (Android/iOS – free)
With Duolingo, you can learn one of 22 new languages for free. This engaging app works like a video game and breaks lessons down into short, easy chunks. Each lesson includes speaking, listening, translation and multiple choice parts. You will receive instant feedback on your answers, which will help you improve. Duolingo also tracks your progress in multiple ways to help keep you motivated.
5. Keep a Diary
Momento (iOS – free)
If you’ve struggled in the past to keep a diary, Momento can help. With Momento, you can collect your digital memories and keep them all in one spot. Momento automatically collects your daily activities, posts, and pictures from your social media apps. Sleepfulness believes that sleep affects everything. The app is a collection of guided audio tracks designed to help you drift off and sleep better. There are also extra packs (for purchase) for specific sleep problems. If you are having trouble sleeping, this app could be worth a try.
8. Stay Organized
Picniic (iOS – free)
Picniic is a family management system to help families stay connected and organized. It features a shared to-do list, calendar, and event manager. Tasks can be assigned to specific family members and then tracked. With Picniic, you can see where family members are and share your location. Another nice feature is that you can securely store personal family information in an encrypted storage locker.
9. Eat Out Less
Kitchen Stories (Android/iOS – free)
If you want to eat out less and eat at home more, but don’t know where to start, Kitchen Stories can help you out. Kitchen Stories makes cooking at home much less intimidating. They have high-resolution videos and step-by-step images to help you through the recipes. There are new recipes every week, so cooking at home doesn’t get boring.

Yousican bills itself as “your personal music teacher.” With the app, you can learn guitar, piano, bass and even ukulele. With Yousican, you get step-by-step tutorials. When you play, you will receive instant feedback on your accuracy and rhythm. The app also allows you to track your progress and see improvement.
