On April 30, the free Windows update went live. If you choose to update your PC, here are some tips to ensure this update goes smoothly.
- Back up your files – This step is important any time you have a major update or change. The best way to ensure that your data remains safe is to create a backup. This is easy to do with Window’s since they have a built-in backup service. Just go to Settings > Update & Security > Backup.
- Back up your full system – You can also create a system image of your PC. This ensures you can recover things like settings and apps as well. This is more complicated, but the directions can be found here.
- Free up space – Updates can take up a lot of space, so make sure you have room on your hard drive before you start. Delete old files, empty your recycling bin, move some files around, etc. Find out some tips on how to spring clean your hard drive here.
- Disconnect peripherals you don’t need – Make sure to disconnect things like printers and external drives. For desktops, all you need are a keyboard and a mouse. Nothing extra should be connected to a laptop. This will make sure that Windows doesn’t have to try to locate new drivers while it updates. You can do that later.
- Temporarily disable security utilities – Your antivirus and firewall apps can create problems when trying to install new system updates. Disable them to ensure a smooth update. You can open your security app to turn off any processes. Or go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Security and click the Open Windows Defender Security Center button to disable Windows Defender’s built-in security tools.
